About Westlake

Westlake Boys High School is a large state secondary school for boys on Auckland’s North Shore. It opened in 1962 when the original Westlake High School split into separate boys and girls schools located a short distance apart. Today Westlake Boys serves more than 2,700 students from Years 9 to 13 and shares its motto, Virtute Experiamur, with its sister school. The campus sits in Forrest Hill and has grown into one of New Zealand’s most well known state boys schools.

The school offers a broad academic programme built around the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, supported by strong arts, music and co curricular pathways. Westlake Boys and Westlake Girls collaborate frequently, producing joint music ensembles, choirs, orchestras and theatre productions. The school’s cultural life is well established, with award winning choirs, orchestras and performing arts groups that compete at national festivals.

Westlake Boys is highly competitive in sport, producing national athletes across basketball, rowing, cricket, football, sailing and both rugby codes. Many old boys have gone on to become All Blacks, Olympians, international cricketers and elite professional athletes. With strong academic results, a large student roll and a wide range of co curricular opportunities, Westlake Boys stands as one of Auckland’s leading secondary schools.
