About St Munchins

St Munchin’s College is a long-established Catholic boys’ secondary school located in Corbally, Limerick. Founded in 1796 by Bishop John Young, it is one of Ireland’s oldest educational institutions and continues to serve the Diocese of Limerick through a strong academic, cultural, and sporting tradition. The college currently enrols more than 650 students.

Originally established as a diocesan seminary with a focus on philosophy and divinity, the school evolved through several locations before moving to its purpose-built campus in Corbally in 1962. The new college was opened by President Éamon de Valera and has since been expanded with modern facilities including additional class halls, a library, a computer centre, and a swimming pool. The school motto, Veritas in Caritate (“If we live by the truth and in love, we shall grow in all ways”), reflects its educational and pastoral ethos.

St Munchin’s has a strong reputation in rugby and is regarded as a key development school for Munster and Ireland. The college competes in the Munster Schools Junior and Senior Cups and is recognised as a consistent contributor of elite talent. Alumni include Keith Earls, Conor Murray, Anthony Foley, Marcus Horan, Donnacha Ryan, Jeremy Staunton, Neil Cronin, and former Lions such as Colm Tucker and Bill Mulcahy. Several international referees also began their careers at the school, including George Clancy and David McHugh.

Beyond rugby, students take part in hurling, Gaelic football, athletics, rowing, basketball, and a wide range of cultural, academic, and leadership programmes. The school promotes a strong community ethos underpinned by respect, discipline, and the Spiritan tradition of service.

With a deep heritage, a modern educational environment, and a long record of producing outstanding sportspeople, St Munchin’s College remains one of the most respected schools in Munster.
