About St Josephs, Hunters Hill

St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill — universally known as Joeys — is one of Australia’s most storied Catholic boys’ schools and a flagship institution of the Marist Brothers. Founded in 1881, the school educates approximately 1,100 students from Years 7 to 12, including more than 550 boarders, making it the largest all-boys boarding school in the country and a dominant force in the Sydney GPS system.

Located on a 40-acre campus overlooking the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers, Joeys combines heritage buildings with extensive modern facilities. The main complex dates to the 1880s, while the broader campus includes refectories, dormitories, academic wings, a purpose-built Technology & Arts Precinct, science laboratories, music centre, swimming pool, multiple gymnasiums, and a large outdoor education campus at Colo used for expedition and leadership programmes.

Sport is central to Joeys’ identity and culture. The college maintains more than ten playing fields for rugby, football and cricket, with the famed “Park” — a 10-hectare complex two blocks from the main campus — serving as its elite training and match venue. Rowing is headquartered at Tarban Creek, where the school’s boatshed and pontoons sit just minutes from campus.

Joeys is one of the great rugby nurseries of Australian schools sport. A founding member of the GPS, the college has produced generations of representative players, including multiple Wallabies and three Wallaby captains. Its 1st XV success is unmatched in the competition’s history, highlighted by the 2019 season in which the 1sts, 2nds and 3rds all finished undefeated. The rugby programme remains a cornerstone of the school’s reputation.

Beyond rugby, Joeys competes strongly across the full GPS calendar: rowing (with Head of the River victories in 1911, 1916, 2015 and 2024), cricket, football, basketball, athletics, swimming, tennis and water polo. Facilities and coaching structures reflect the school’s scale, with deep participation and elite pathways across all sports.

The college also offers a broad co-curricular programme including orchestra, debating, chess and outdoor education. Boarders and day students participate side-by-side, with boarding structured across year-level dormitories ranging from large junior dorms to modern senior accommodation wings.

St Joseph’s has educated thousands of “Old Boys,” many of whom have distinguished themselves in public life, professional sport, business and the arts. The St Joseph’s College Old Boys’ Union remains an active network supporting alumni, the school and its wider community.
