About St Johns (RSA)

St John’s College, Johannesburg, founded in 1898, is one of South Africa’s leading independent Anglican schools and a flagship institution in Gauteng. Located in Houghton Estate, the school educates over 1,300 pupils from the Bridge Nursery (000) through to the Pre-Preparatory, Preparatory, College (Grades 8–12) and a co-educational Cambridge A-Level Sixth Form. The school operates under the Diocese of Johannesburg and maintains a long academic tradition guided by its motto Lux Vita Caritas — Light, Life, Love.

The campus is one of the most recognisable educational settings in South Africa, with buildings designed by Sir Herbert Baker and a layout that blends heritage architecture with modern academic facilities. The school offers specialised centres for science, arts, technology, music and pastoral care, along with extensive sports grounds and a strong urban campus identity.

St John’s is academically rigorous, aligned to the IEB examination system and enriched by its Cambridge A-Level programme. The school has consistently ranked among South Africa’s top academic institutions and was placed 11th in Africa in an Africa Almanac continental study (2003). Graduates progress into top South African and international universities.

The college has a broad and competitive sporting culture. Rugby, cricket, football, basketball, rowing, swimming, athletics and squash form the backbone of the programme, with the school competing regularly against some of Johannesburg’s strongest rivals, including King Edward VII School, St Stithians, Parktown Boys’ and CBC Boksburg. The college has produced professional and international athletes in rugby, cricket, football and rowing, including Springboks, international cricketers and Olympians.

Beyond the classroom and sports fields, St John’s offers a wide co-curricular menu including music, choir, debating, drama, community outreach and leadership programmes. Boarding remains an integral part of school life, with modern facilities catering to local and international students.

St John’s has an extensive Old Johannian network spanning business, science, sport, the arts and public life. Notable alumni include Chris Froome (four-time Tour de France winner), Clive Rice, Demetri Catrakilis, Siyabulela Xuza, Hugh Lewin, Tony Trahar, Scott Spedding and numerous leaders in academia, media and industry.

Today, St John’s College stands as one of the most prestigious and recognisable educational institutions in South Africa, combining heritage, academic rigour, competitive sport and a strong Anglican ethos on an iconic Johannesburg campus.
