Presentation Brothers College is a long-established Catholic boys’ school located on the Mardyke in Cork. Founded in 1878, the school has grown from its early South Mall and Western Road sites into a modern, purpose-built campus beside the River Lee. PBC has a strong academic reputation and is consistently ranked among the top-performing boys’ schools in Ireland, with a long tradition of placing students into competitive university programmes across Ireland, the UK and further afield.
The school maintains its Presentation Brothers heritage while operating under a lay trust. Its ethos centres on discipline, social awareness and personal ambition. PBC played an influential role in the founding of SHARE, one of Ireland’s best-known youth-driven charitable initiatives, and the school continues to emphasise community responsibility as part of everyday student life.
Facilities include dedicated classrooms and science labs, a modern ICT infrastructure, a chapel, performance spaces and access to the school’s rowing club and boathouse on the Marina. The curriculum covers the full Junior and Leaving Certificate cycles, offering a broad academic range from languages and the sciences to business, humanities and the creative arts. Transition Year is compulsory and integrates project-based learning, cultural experiences and community engagement.
Rugby is central to the school’s sporting identity. PBC is one of Munster’s most successful rugby schools and competes annually in the Senior Cup and Junior Cup, holding a combined total unmatched in most of the province. The school has produced multiple Ireland internationals, British and Irish Lions, provincial players and coaches. Training takes place at the school’s multi-pitch complex at Dennehy’s Cross, which includes floodlit surfaces and match-grade facilities.
Beyond rugby, students compete in rowing, basketball, golf, GAA, soccer and athletics. The rowing club has a long association with the Marina and operates a full fleet of shells supported by structured coaching. The school also fields teams in provincial and national competitions across several other sports, regularly collecting titles.
Cultural activity is part of the school’s rhythm each year. The drama society stages an annual production, usually aligned to the senior cycle literature curriculum, and the school maintains a strong tradition in debating, music, robotics and academic competitions. Students regularly represent the school in Olympiads, technology events and public speaking.
The alumni network of PBC is extensive across Cork, Ireland and internationally. Former pupils have achieved prominence in business, politics, journalism, medicine, the arts and elite sport. The rugby legacy is particularly strong, with Ronan O’Gara, Simon Zebo, Peter O’Mahony, Tom Kiernan and several others emerging from the school’s pathways.
