About Palmerston North

Palmerston North Boys’ High School was founded in 1902 and became a single-sex boys’ school in 1920 after splitting from the original co-educational Palmerston North High School. The campus sits on Featherston Street in the heart of the city, close to major residential areas and neighbouring Queen Elizabeth College. From its early Presbyterian roots, the school has grown into one of New Zealand’s most established boys’ secondary institutions with a long tradition of academic ambition, discipline and leadership.

Today the school enrolls close to 1,800 students, including around 180 boarders at College House. It draws boys from across Manawatū, with strong representation from Palmerston North, nearby towns and rural communities. The culture is shaped by its club system, long standing rituals, a strong prefect structure and an emphasis on character development. Academic expectations are high, and the school has been recognised for producing scholars, national leaders and consistent NCEA achievement.

Sport is a cornerstone of life at PNBHS. The school competes nationally in rugby, cricket, cycling, hockey, football, basketball and a wide range of individual codes. Its first XV rugby side is one of the most respected in the country, and the school’s alumni include All Blacks, Olympians, Super Rugby players, Black Caps and leading athletes across multiple sports. With extensive facilities, a strong boarding programme and a reputation built over a century, Palmerston North Boys’ High School remains one of New Zealand’s flagship boys’ schools.
