Padua College is a large independent Catholic boys school in Kedron, Brisbane, founded in 1956 and operated by the Franciscan Friars. The school remains the only Franciscan-run institution of its kind in Australia, giving it a distinctive cultural identity shaped by the order’s values of service, humility and brotherhood. Padua serves boys from Year 5 to Year 12 and draws from a wide catchment across Brisbane’s north, supported by modern learning facilities across its Assisi and Greccio campuses.
Academically and culturally the school reflects a strong Franciscan ethos while operating as a competitive, mainstream independent school with a broad co-curricular programme. The house system underpins student life, while major annual events such as the Friars Cup and Padua Dash have become part of the school’s internal tradition. The school is known for balancing academic expectations with pastoral care and structured character development.
Padua has long been regarded as one of Queensland’s most influential sporting schools, particularly in rugby league. The college is a historic force in the Confraternity Shield competition, producing multiple Queensland and State of Origin representatives across several decades. In the AIC competition Padua has achieved premierships in rugby, basketball, volleyball, cricket and football, contributing to a strong all-round sporting culture. The school also competes successfully in AFL Queensland Schools Cup pathways and maintains strong participation in athletics, swimming and community-based sport.
The alumni base features a significant number of professional athletes across rugby league, rugby union and Australian rules football, along with Olympians, media figures, musicians, business leaders and public officials. This breadth reflects the school’s reputation as a major all-round boys programme within the Brisbane independent sector.
