Paarl Gimnasium is one of South Africa’s most historic Afrikaans high schools and a central institution in the rugby landscape of the Western Cape. Founded in 1858 by Rev van der Lingen, the school grew from its Dutch Christian origins into a modern coeducational high school with a strong cultural identity, a large student body and a long-standing relationship with the wider Paarl community. The campus sits on Main Road and blends historic architecture with updated facilities supporting academics, sport and student life.
The school is synonymous with elite rugby development. Across more than a century, Paarl Gim has produced some of the country’s most influential Springboks, including Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, Marius Joubert, Handré Pollard and De Wet Barry. The annual Interschools fixture against Paarl Boys’ High is one of the biggest school events in South Africa, consistently drawing crowds in the tens of thousands and serving as a defining moment in the regional sporting calendar. Netball and athletics are also major strengths, with the school winning the Kay Motsepe league in 2024 and representing South Africa internationally in Singapore.
Gimnasium balances its sporting pedigree with established academic and cultural programmes anchored in strong Afrikaans tradition. The school’s house spirit, symbolic motto Sol Justitiae Illustra Nos and long-running newspaper Sollie contribute to a cohesive internal culture. Pupils come from across the Winelands and the broader Boland region, supported by hostel accommodation and a structured pastoral environment.
The alumni network spans national sport, public life and media, with a large concentration of professional rugby players forming the backbone of its legacy. Paarl Gim stands as one of the most influential rugby schools in the country, combining history, community presence and consistent high-performance output within a modern educational framework.
