About Maritzburg College

Maritzburg College is one of South Africa’s most historic boys’ schools and the oldest boys’ high school in KwaZulu-Natal, founded in 1863 and situated on a large campus in Pietermaritzburg. The school’s identity is shaped by its Victorian origins, a long boarding tradition and a strong, structured culture that continues to define day-to-day life on campus. With more than 1,200 boys, including a significant boarding cohort across five houses, College remains one of the province’s largest and most established institutions.

Academically, the school offers the full NSC curriculum with a wide range of subjects in sciences, commerce, humanities, engineering graphics and design and the arts. Results are consistently strong, supported by an experienced staff of more than 100 teachers and a clear progression structure. The school maintains a high matric pass rate each year, with a sizeable group of boys attaining university entrance and multiple distinctions. Facilities include specialised teaching blocks, the Cripps Human Performance Centre, laboratories, arts spaces and refurbished historic buildings such as Clark House and the Victoria Hall.

College is widely known for its sporting depth. Rugby, cricket, hockey, canoeing and athletics sit at the heart of school culture, with large participation numbers and competitive fixtures across all age groups. The school routinely fields more than twenty rugby teams and more than twenty cricket teams each season. The First XV has an historic record shaped by legendary figures such as Skonk Nicholson, and the school regularly produces provincial and national players. Maritzburg College has one of the highest totals of sporting internationals produced by any South African school, with representation across rugby, cricket, rowing, canoeing, swimming and other codes. Derby days with schools such as Affies, Pretoria Boys High and the major KwaZulu-Natal rivals remain major events on the calendar.

School life is grounded in a house system that covers both dayboys and boarders, along with a structured set of traditions and responsibilities that have evolved from the school’s British heritage. These systems are now governed by formal policy to ensure they remain aligned with modern expectations while retaining the school’s distinctive character. The campus atmosphere blends long-standing customs with a wider cultural programme that includes music, clubs and inter-house competition.

Maritzburg College today is a large, tradition-driven boys’ school with a clear academic base, strong pastoral structure and one of the most extensive sporting programmes in the country. Its heritage, scale and competitive record make it a prominent institution within KwaZulu-Natal and a major contributor to South African school sport.
