Jeppe High School for Boys is a long-established public boys’ high school in Kensington, Johannesburg. Founded in 1890 through the original St Michael’s College and later Jeppestown Grammar School, it is regarded as the oldest known school in the city. The school shifted between private and public governance in its early decades before stabilising under the Transvaal Education Department in the early 1900s. Growth accelerated after the Anglo-Boer War, leading to the acquisition of the current Roberts Avenue campus and the eventual move to a boys-only structure in 1919 as enrolment increased.
The school’s architecture and heritage form a central part of its identity. The stone main building and the First World War Memorial are national monuments, reflecting Jeppe’s long record of service and tradition. Payne Hall, named after former headmaster JH Payne, remains a signature feature of campus life. The school’s hostels, including Oribi House and Sable House, form a structured boarding environment that supports boys from across Gauteng and further afield.
Jeppe maintains a broad academic offering within the National Senior Certificate framework. Learners progress through the full FET curriculum, with the option to take Advanced Programme Mathematics. The school’s culture emphasises discipline, structure and steady academic expectation, supported by an experienced staff and long-running scholarship pathways. The Jake White Scholarship Fund and the Theo Jackson Scholarship Fund provide access opportunities and support boys of strong character or promise.
Sport is central to the Jeppe experience and draws significant participation. The school competes across rugby, cricket, hockey, basketball, water polo, rowing, athletics, football, squash, golf and tennis. Rugby remains one of the school’s flagship sports, with Jeppe regularly competing in the Johannesburg schools circuit and producing several provincial, professional and international players. Facilities across the aquatics centre, fields and indoor spaces support year-round activity.
Extramural life extends well beyond sport, with established programmes in debating, choir, pipe band, emergency medical care, public speaking and a wide variety of cultural clubs. The Jeppe High School for Boys Association maintains strong links with alumni, supports school initiatives and contributes to scholarships and campus projects.
Today, Jeppe High School for Boys presents itself as a heritage-rich, disciplined and competitive boys’ school with more than a century of educational continuity. Its combination of tradition, academic stability and strong co-curricular structures makes it a significant institution in Johannesburg’s education landscape.
