About Ipswich Grammar

Ipswich Grammar School is an independent day and boarding school for boys located on Grammar School Hill in Ipswich, Queensland. Founded in 1863 under the provisions of the Grammar Schools Act, it was the first secondary school established in Queensland and remains one of the oldest boys’ schools in Australia. The original Great Hall and early buildings still occupy the top of the hill and are recognised on the Queensland Heritage Register.

The school now educates boys from preparatory level through to year twelve. More than 1,300 students attend the school, including a boarding community of roughly 150 boys from regional Queensland, interstate and overseas. Boarding is fully integrated into campus life and operates through modern residential facilities built around the school’s heritage centre.

Ipswich Grammar School offers a structured academic programme that aligns with the Queensland curriculum. Students progress through primary and secondary phases with access to specialist teaching in science, mathematics, English, humanities, technology and the arts. Recent developments include a dedicated STEM facility with laboratories and learning spaces designed for senior science and engineering. The junior school and preparatory years have been expanded to support a full P to 12 model.

Sport has long been central to the school’s identity. Ipswich Grammar is a founding member of the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland and participates across rugby, cricket, athletics, swimming, basketball, tennis and other GPS activities. The athletics programme is a consistent strength and the school has produced national representatives in multiple sports, including Commonwealth and Olympic athletes. Additional sports grounds at Brassall support training and competition across all major codes.

A six-house system provides pastoral structure and underpins inter-house competitions throughout the year. Houses are named in honour of long-serving headmasters and offer a point of belonging from the early years to senior school. Leadership opportunities are embedded through senior student involvement in house activities and school events.

The campus combines historic buildings with contemporary facilities, including specialist arts spaces, science buildings, sports complexes, and a dedicated junior school precinct. The school’s museum and archive, housed in the Great Hall, preserves records and artefacts from more than 160 years of school history.

Today, Ipswich Grammar School presents a blend of heritage, academic breadth and strong co-curricular involvement. Its long-standing position within Queensland education, coupled with a broad day and boarding offering, positions it as a significant boys’ school in South East Queensland.
