About Francis Douglas Memorial

Francis Douglas Memorial College is a Catholic boys’ secondary school in Westown, New Plymouth, offering education from Year 7 to Year 13 alongside well established boarding facilities. Founded in 1959 by the De La Salle Brothers, the college carries forward the traditions of the Lasallian order and the example of its namesake, Father Francis Vernon Douglas, whose life of service continues to inspire the school’s ethos.

The college places strong emphasis on developing young men who are guided by faith, character and responsibility. Its motto, Christo Duce, reflects a commitment to leadership grounded in Christian values and to educating students who are prepared to contribute positively to their communities. Academic learning is supported by a well structured pastoral system and a culture that encourages respect, diligence and personal growth.

Sport is a central part of school life, with a large number of students involved across a wide range of codes. Rugby has long been a focal point and the annual fixture against New Plymouth Boys’ High School is one of the highlights of the school year. Hockey, cricket, basketball, football, rowing and athletics also have strong participation and support. The school’s sporting tradition has produced many provincial and national representatives.

Music and cultural activities play an important role in the college’s identity. The music department provides opportunities for students to develop performance skills, and school bands have participated in regional competitions and community events. Māori culture is actively promoted through activities such as the inter house haka competition and visits to local marae, helping students build understanding and confidence in bicultural engagement.

Students belong to one of four houses, which provide a pastoral base and create a sense of belonging and healthy competition. Lasalle House serves as the college’s boarding facility, offering a structured and supportive environment for boarders from across the region.

Over the years Francis Douglas Memorial College has built a strong reputation for producing well rounded graduates who excel in diverse fields. Former students have gone on to prominence in academia, public service, the arts, media and professional sport. The college continues to balance tradition with modern educational practice, maintaining a stable and values driven environment where students are encouraged to strive for excellence and lead with integrity.
