About Eton College

Eton College is a boys boarding school in the town of Eton in Berkshire. Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, it is one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom and remains closely linked to its original purpose of providing a broad and rigorous education within a strong pastoral and community framework. The school’s motto, Floreat Etona, reflects its long tradition of academic ambition, personal development and service.

The campus spans more than 1,600 acres on the banks of the River Thames and combines historic buildings with extensive modern facilities. The heart of the school includes the College Chapel, School Yard, teaching blocks and libraries, while the wider grounds hold playing fields, rowing lakes, gardens and residential houses. Many of the main buildings date from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries and give the school a distinctive architectural character, while recent additions have expanded classroom, sporting and cultural spaces to meet contemporary needs.

Eton accommodates boys from thirteen to eighteen and operates through a house system that forms the basis of pastoral care and daily life. There are twenty five boarding houses, each led by a housemaster and supported by a large team of tutors and staff. The house system creates smaller communities within the wider school, with boys taking part in regular house events, competitions and traditions. Academic study is supported by a structured tutorial programme that guides pupils through GCSEs, A Levels and a wide range of enrichment opportunities.

The school has a long tradition in the arts, sciences and humanities. Pupils benefit from specialist teaching, well equipped laboratories, extensive libraries and numerous subject societies that run talks, lectures and research projects. Music and drama are prominent throughout the year, supported by dedicated theatres, rehearsal spaces and concert halls. Concerts, plays, workshops and exhibitions contribute to a lively cultural life on campus.

Sport plays a central role in the daily routine. Eton offers an extensive programme that includes rugby, football, rowing, cricket, hockey, athletics and tennis, as well as several unique sports that are part of the school’s heritage. The college’s facilities include grass and artificial pitches, historic courts, a running track and access to the internationally recognised rowing lake at Dorney. Participation is encouraged at all levels, from competitive fixtures to recreational sport.

Co curricular life is wide ranging, with more than eighty clubs and societies covering interests such as debating, technology, languages, entrepreneurship, community outreach and outdoor pursuits. Regular lectures, academic prizes, travel grants and specialist programmes provide further avenues for ambition and personal development.

Eton’s alumni, known as Old Etonians, form a global network and have contributed to many fields including public life, science, education, sport, the arts and business. The school maintains close links with its community and partners through outreach, charity initiatives and shared activities that support local and national projects.

Today, Eton College presents itself as a large, well resourced boarding school that combines deep historic roots with a modern educational outlook. Its aim is to provide an environment where boys can thrive academically, grow in confidence and character, and prepare for a broad range of future opportunities.
