About Christs College

Christ’s College is one of New Zealand’s oldest educational institutions, founded in 1850 to serve the children of early Canterbury settlers and shaped from the beginning by the traditions of English public schools. Initially based in the Lyttelton immigration barracks, the school soon moved across the Port Hills, first to St Michael’s parsonage and then, in 1856, to its current Rolleston Avenue site beside what is now Hagley Park. The campus grew gradually around a central quadrangle and today remains one of Christchurch’s most recognisable heritage settings, defined by its neogothic stone buildings, historic chapel and the long established layout that reflects more than a century and a half of continuous use.

The college has always placed a strong emphasis on academic breadth, offering boys a rigorous curriculum grounded in literacy, numeracy, sciences, humanities, languages and the arts. The modern programme includes NCEA pathways as well as the school’s own Year 10 to 11 diploma, which introduces students to a wide range of disciplines before senior subject specialisation. Music, drama and cultural activities are central to school life, with annual productions, choir commitments, debating, service initiatives and interhouse competitions contributing to a rich co curricular environment.

Christ’s College maintains a balance between day and boarding communities, supported by ten houses that provide structure, pastoral care and a sense of identity. Each house has its own traditions and activities, and interhouse competitions across sport, music and drama are an important feature of school life. Boarding remains an integral part of the college, with dedicated houses, tutors and facilities giving students a stable and supportive residential environment.

Sport is a core expectation for every boy at the college. The school offers a wide selection of summer and winter codes, supported by extensive onsite facilities including playing fields, an indoor pool, a gym and specialist training areas. The college also uses offsite grounds such as its cricket and rugby facilities in South Hagley Park and its rowing base at Kerr’s Reach. Rugby has a long and storied history at Christ’s College, with records of the game being played there since the 1850s. The annual fixture against Christchurch Boys’ High School is one of the most enduring school rivalries in the country and remains a highlight of the sporting calendar.

With its Anglican identity, long history and commitment to developing well rounded young men, Christ’s College combines tradition with contemporary education. Strong academic outcomes, a thriving cultural programme, competitive sport and a distinctive heritage campus all contribute to the school’s standing as one of New Zealand’s leading independent boys’ schools.
