About Christ College, Brecon

Christ College, Brecon is an independent coeducational day and boarding school situated in the centre of Brecon. Established by Royal Charter in 1541, it is one of the oldest educational institutions in Wales and continues to operate from a historic campus that incorporates medieval buildings from the former Dominican friary. The school educates pupils from age four through to eighteen and has a long standing reputation for strong academic results and balanced all round development.

The college combines traditional heritage with modern facilities. Key parts of the site such as the chapel and School House retain their original character, while later developments provide contemporary boarding, teaching and sports spaces. Christ College has five senior boarding houses, each with its own identity, and a prep school based in St Nicholas House. Boarding is available from age ten.

Academically, the school maintains high performance across GCSE and A level subjects, with notable strengths in mathematics, sciences and humanities. Estyn’s most recent full inspection assessed the school as excellent in all categories, recognising the quality of teaching, leadership and pupil wellbeing.

Sport is a central part of life at Christ College. The school is known for its rugby tradition and has produced a number of Wales internationals across different eras. Its cricket ground has also hosted recognised fixtures, including matches against touring international sides and Glamorgan second eleven games. Facilities across the wider campus support a full programme of rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics and outdoor activities.

Christ College continues to present itself as a close knit but outward looking community. With a blend of history, academic strength, coeducational boarding and a long sporting tradition, the school remains a prominent institution within Welsh independent education.
