About Cardiff and Vale

Cardiff and Vale College is a large further education institution serving Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Known as CAVC, the college provides education and training for students aged sixteen and above and has become one of the largest colleges in the United Kingdom. It was created in 2011 following the merger of Barry College and Coleg Glan Hafren, a move encouraged by the Welsh Government to strengthen provision and create a more efficient, wide ranging learning environment.

The college operates across multiple sites, offering specialist facilities for a broad range of vocational and academic pathways. Its main campus on Dumballs Road opened in 2015 and represents a major investment in central Cardiff. The building includes extensive teaching space, film and dance studios, a theatre, commercial hair and beauty salons, and a top floor restaurant and bar used for training and events. In addition to the flagship city centre site, the college maintains specialist centres for automotive engineering, construction, building services and creative industries, as well as a campus in Barry.

Cardiff and Vale College supports thousands of full time and part time learners each year. Its curriculum covers A levels, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships, higher education programmes delivered in partnership with universities and a wide range of professional courses. The college places a strong emphasis on skills development and industry links, aiming to prepare students for both employment and further study.

The college also plays an active role in the wider community. In 2015 it took over the running of Cardiff International Sports Stadium, using the facility for education and training while ensuring public access. This arrangement reflects the college’s commitment to contributing to local sport and wellbeing.

Cardiff and Vale College continues to present itself as an inclusive and forward looking institution offering a diverse learning experience. With large student numbers, modern facilities and a wide regional footprint, it remains a central part of further education provision in South Wales.
