Brynteg School is a large coeducational comprehensive school in Bridgend, serving the communities of Brackla, Litchard and the town centre. Although it became a comprehensive school in 1971, Brynteg traces its origins to the late nineteenth century and reflects a long educational tradition in the area. Over more than a century the school has developed through several phases of expansion and reorganisation as pupil numbers and local needs have grown.
The school’s early history began in 1896 with the opening of Bridgend Intermediate School on Morfa Street. Continued growth led to new buildings and, in 1935, the establishment of a new boys’ grammar school on Ewenny Road. Girls remained at the original site, which later became the Girls’ Grammar School. A further development came in 1948 with the opening of Heolgam County Secondary School, which served younger pupils and expanded steadily through the 1950s and 1960s. These strands of local education were brought together in 1971 when the boys’ grammar school and Heolgam merged to create Brynteg Comprehensive School. For many years the school operated across two linked sites, with lower and upper year groups accommodated separately.
Brynteg has grown steadily and is now one of the largest secondary schools in Wales. Its campus along Ewenny Road has been developed over time to meet the demands of a large student population. The school has seen regular investment in teaching space, including dedicated blocks for mathematics, science, languages, art and English, as well as specialist rooms for technology and practical subjects. The campus includes rugby pitches, a cricket field, tennis courts, a gravel hockey pitch and a large indoor sports hall. In recent years the organisation of the site has been refined further, with departments grouped by subject areas and the creation of a well-being and reception centre housing pastoral and support services.
Brynteg offers education for pupils aged eleven to eighteen. The school provides a broad academic curriculum supported by strong pastoral care and co-curricular opportunities. The sixth form delivers A levels and the Welsh Baccalaureate, continuing a tradition of post sixteen study that dates back to the grammar school era. Brynteg maintains active links with its feeder primary schools and remains a major educational hub within Bridgend County Borough.
Sport plays a significant role in school life. Brynteg is widely associated with rugby union and has produced numerous players who have represented Wales and the British and Irish Lions. The school also supports a wide range of other sports and activities, reflecting its large intake and strong community identity.
Traditions remain an important aspect of the school. The motto A fo ben bid bont translates to To be a leader, be a bridge and is a phrase closely tied to the school’s ethos. Brynteg also marks Remembrance Day each year with a service honouring former pupils who served in conflicts.
Today Brynteg continues to present itself as a major comprehensive school with a long history, substantial facilities and a commitment to academic achievement, personal development and community involvement. Its evolution from multiple earlier institutions reflects more than a century of educational change in Bridgend and its position as one of the area’s leading secondary schools.
