Hoërskool Brandwag was founded in 1937 as an Afrikaans-medium high school in Uitenhage, rooted in Christian values and named after Die Brandwag (The Sentinel), the Drakensberg peak that appears on the school badge. Over the decades the school has grown into a well-established academic institution serving the wider Nelson Mandela Bay community, known for its strong sense of discipline, tradition and its motto U dienswillige dienaar (Your obedient servant), taken from the writings of C. J. Langenhoven. The campus maintains a suburban, community-orientated atmosphere, providing a structured environment for boys and girls in Grades 8 to 12.
Brandwag balances academics with a broad co-curricular life, and sport is central to the school’s identity. Rugby remains the flagship code with the First XV known as the Wolfpack competing regularly against leading Eastern Cape schools, alongside strong programmes in netball, hockey, cricket, tennis, athletics and cross-country. Cultural opportunities include drama, choir, debating and student leadership activities that reinforce the school’s values of service, teamwork and respect. Today Hoërskool Brandwag is recognised for producing confident, grounded learners through a blend of academic focus, sporting pride and long-standing Afrikaans school tradition.
