Aotea College opened in 1978 to serve the growing northern suburbs of Porirua and has since become one of the area’s key co-educational secondary schools. The college draws a diverse roll from Aotea, Papakowhai and the wider Porirua basin, reflecting the cultural mix of the region. It offers education from Year 9 to Year 13 with a strong focus on inclusion, personal growth and community identity.
The campus underwent a major redevelopment between 2017 and 2019 after years of building deterioration, resulting in modern learning spaces, improved heating and lighting, and a complete rebuild of the Te Manawa block. These upgrades revitalised the school environment and supported a shift toward flexible, collaborative learning. Aotea now operates with contemporary facilities and a steadily growing roll that sits above thirteen hundred students.
Aotea College is known for strong participation in sport and the arts, with a standout reputation in national barbershop competitions. The school has also produced notable alumni across sport and culture, including basketballer Tania Tupu, rugby player Serge Lilo and writer Tayi Tibble. It continues to emphasise balanced achievement and a positive, connected school culture.
