Situated beneath the Langeberg Mountains in the historic Overberg town of Swellendam, Hoërskool Swellendam is a proud community school with an educational heritage stretching back to 1862. The institution officially gained high-school status in 1915 and has since developed generations of young people guided by its enduring motto, Altiora Semper — Always Higher.
Although relatively small, with only a few classes in each grade, Hoërskool Swellendam offers its learners an impressively broad and balanced education. The school places strong emphasis on individual development, independent thinking and preparing confident, well-rounded young adults for life beyond the classroom. Its academic programme includes traditional university-entry subjects alongside Agricultural Sciences, Engineering Graphics and Design, Music, Consumer Studies, Computer Applications Technology and opportunities to study Further Studies Mathematics and Information Technology.
The school has established a strong recent academic record, achieving a 100% matric pass rate in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Beyond academics, the Swellies enjoy a lively sporting culture encompassing rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, tennis, swimming, golf, tug of war and several additional disciplines. Former Springbok Stefan Terblanche is among the school’s best-known sporting alumni.
Music, drama, art, dance, choir, debating, public speaking and eisteddfod participation form an equally important part of school life. This combination of opportunity, personal attention, tradition and unmistakable school spirit makes Hoërskool Swellendam a school deeply connected to its community while continuing to strive, in every sphere, always higher.
