The Otago Schools Rugby Championship is the premier secondary school rugby competition in the Otago region of New Zealand, showcasing the best First XV teams from Dunedin and the wider South Otago area. Managed by the Otago Rugby Football Union, the championship plays a crucial role in developing young talent and feeding players into the Highlanders and Otago academy systems.
The competition typically features leading rugby schools such as Otago Boys’ High School, John McGlashan College, King’s High School, South Otago High School, and Waitaki Boys’ High School. The teams compete in a round-robin format through the winter season, followed by playoffs and a grand final to determine the regional champion.
Renowned for its physical style, passionate rivalries, and strong rugby traditions, the Otago Schools Championship serves as the qualifying pathway for the South Island Schools Championship and, ultimately, the New Zealand Top 4. It remains a cornerstone of southern schoolboy rugby, blending history, pride, and player development in equal measure.
