The New Zealand Top 4 Schools Championship is the pinnacle of secondary school rugby in the country, bringing together the four regional champions from the Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, and South Island regions. Held annually in early September, the tournament decides the national First XV champion and is considered the highest honour in New Zealand schoolboy rugby.

Each region follows its own qualification pathway, with the respective champions advancing to the Top 4. The competition is played over a weekend in a knockout format featuring semi-finals on the Saturday and the national final on the Sunday. Matches are typically hosted at the Sport and Rugby Institute in Palmerston North, creating a central stage for the nation’s best young players.

Known for its intensity, atmosphere, and elite standard of play, the Top 4 has become a showcase of New Zealand’s rugby culture and a launching pad for future professional talent.
